Correlating Indian Stock Indices (BSE) With American Stock Indices (Nasdaq) MBA Project

ABSTRACT:
Correlating BSE Sensex with NASDAQ stock exchange.
CORRELATING INDIAN STOCK INDICES (BSE) WITH AMERICAN STOCK INDICES (NASDAQ)This Correlating Indian Stock Indices (BSE) With American Stock Indices (Nasdaq) MBA Project study tries to analyze the relation between BSE sensex with NASDAQ.

When BSE sensex increases to new highs questions arises that weather there is an increase in other world stock market or not, I tried to find out the correlation between BSE sensex with NASDAQ

For this purpose I have collected daily 1 year closings from 1st JAN 2007 to 31st DEC 2007 of BSE and AMERICAN stock markets.

FINDINGS OF THE STUDY:

The study suggested that there is an overall positive as well as negative correlation between BSE sensex and NASDAQ.

The study supports that mergers of top Indian companies will have its effect on Indian as well as foreign stock markets also.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY:

•    To Analyze The Performance Of Bse Sensex.

•    To Analyze The Performance Of Nasdaq.

•    To Know The Risk And Return Of The Bse &Nasdaq.

•    To Correlate The Performance Of Bse Sensex With Nasdaq With The Help Of Returns.

•    To Identify The Factors Influencing The Indices.

CONCLUSION:

Here correlation means relationship between two or more variables. In this study we have taken two variables BSE SENSEX and NASDAQ.

In the month of April the correlation between BSE SENSEX and NASDAQ is 0.49.so there exists slight positive relationship and all data points are form as non linear structure and tilts upwards towards right.

Remaining all the months there exists low correlation, and in the months of July and May there exists negative correlation ie -0.17 and -0.69, so there exists strong negative relationship and all data points tilts downward towards right.

There is an overall positive as well as negative correlation of returns between the BSE sensex and NASDAQ stock exchange, because out of (12) month data collected (10) months have positive correlation and (2) months have negative correlation on returns. It shows that when BSE is increasing NASDAQ is decreasing and vice-versa because financial institutions are the main investors in BSE sensex

If we see the closing of both BSE and NASDAQ it’s as follows. BSE started with a closing of 13940.14and NASDAQ started with a closing of 2422.41

By seeing the closing of both the stock markets we can say that increase and movement of funds is more in BSE when compared to NASDAQ.

•    Incidents happening at the time of the survey have affected it.

•    Employees thought that the questionnaire was too big and too specific.

•    Custom insight web portal has a limitation of giving analysis of 10 responses free of cost, so we could not get full fledge report of all the employees together and hence we thought of creating our own report using Ms-Excel.

•    Responses to open ended questions were not been given as the employees were reluctant in giving responses due, to which we could not decipher the exact opinion of the Employees for most of the questions.

In this industry the index points are not following the trend. They are fluctuating without any trend. Reached lowest level in the month of May and higher level in the month of February.

RECOMMENDATIONS:-

This study recommended some companies and industries on the basis of coefficient of variation. In the case of industries investor better to go for IT industry followed by Banking Industry and if he want to diversify the risk he can go for automobile industry then last preference shall given to Pharmaceutical Industry.

In the case of companies investor wants to invest in more industries and don’t want to give preference for the specific industry. The investor needs to give the preference to the companies on the basis of coefficient of variation. First rank will be Mahindra and Mahindra from Auto industry and next HDFC from Banking Industry. Then give the preference to UTI, NIIT , ICICI, Aurobindo, SBI, TATA, WIPRO, and so on.

Performance Review System MBA HR Project

Performance Review SystemHalcyon Technologies has given me an excellent opportunity of designing a new Performance Appraisal System for their company. It was designed after understanding the Halcyon Environment at whole.

Since my internship was for four months, I could not be a part of the entire Appraisal System but only the Review system.

A customized and relevant Review System was prepared which would fulfill both the needs of Management and Employees. The Self Review Form and Peer Feedback form was designed and then sessions were conducted to make the employees understand the Process and importance of Performance Review. Then as scheduled the one-one meeting between the employee and their respective Team Leader was conducted and the final report was given to HR Manager.

This Review would help Employees in their upcoming Performance Appraisal where the hikes, incentives etc would be based on their targets set at the time of Review.

Objectives of the Study

Halcyon being a start – up company I got the opportunity to design a new Performance Review System under the guidance of HR Manager. The secondary objectives of my study were:

1.    To develop an effective Performance Appraisal system.
2.    To know the Requirements of management regarding the designing of new Appraisal system and Review System.
3.    To help the Employee in understanding the Process of Performance Review.

Findings

as the whole Process was designed by the HR department, I was also involved in it from the designing stage to the implementation part of the Review system. In this process I could recognize the benefits derived out of this system as well as observed some drawbacks.

My Findings from the questionnaire were:

1.    The perception of employees regarding performance Review was a hike in Salary, which is not the case in reality.
2.    After knowing the requirements of employees a training session was conducted to help the employees understand the need and process of Performance Review and Criteria to give Self Rating.
3.    They were aware of the fact that the General Work Behavior would play a major role in their Review but were unaware of all the Standards and Aspects used to Evaluate their Performance

Other Findings:

4.    The process did not take place in the exact time frame as planned and scheduled.
5.    A good improvement was seen in the inter-personal relationship between the team leader and subordinates.
6.    Many employees could not justify the ratings given by them in the Self Review Form.
7.    It helped the employees in understanding their past performance and setting up of targets and goals for future.
8.    They got to understand the organizational needs and it helped in developing a sense of belonging towards the company.
9.    It helped the management in identifying the Caliber of employees and encourage the same.
10.    The employer and employees got a platform to understand each other in a better manner.
11.     The management was too much dependent on team leaders for conducting
Reviews.
12.     When the Peer Feedback Form was given employees were too hesitant in giving ratings to their colleagues.

Recommendations

After the successful completion of the whole Process of Performance Review System MBA HR Project  under the supervision of the HR Manager I.e. by recognizing the need for Review policy, designing the policy, taking up a presentation to explain the importance and process of Review, attending the meetings with the team leader, being a part in discussions by the management regarding appraisals  and analysis of the feedback given by employees helped me to evaluate the benefits and shortcomings of the Performance Review Process and recommend the measures to improve the same.
