Solar Sails Mech Project Report for Students

October 16, 2011

A Solar Sails Mech Project Report for Students is basically a large mirror that reflects sunlight. When the photons of sunlight strike this sail and reflect back they push the sail by providing a momentum to it. As there are large numbers of photons and continuously strike on the sail, there is a pressure developed on the sail. This generates a constant acceleration in the spacecraft.

Though the force exerted on the solar sail is quite less than the chemical rocket, it develops acceleration and achieves a high velocity. For optimum working, the sail should occupy a huge area for effective capture of sunlight. The direction of the sail can be altered by changing the angle of the sail with respect to the sun. Directivity of the sail towards the sun can be achieved by employing the photon’s pressure that slows down the spacecraft’s speed and enables its orbit to move closer to the sun.

Project Working:

In this paper “Solar Sails Mech Project Report for Students”, when the light from the sun is reflected from the surface of the solar sail, photons are transferred to it. Acceleration develops gradually giving the sail a constant velocity to propel. Thus when a beam of light is pointed at this bright mirror like surface there is reflection of photons.

A solar sail is constructed by designing several reflective surfaces. When this brightened sail is made to face the sun then there is a steady flow of protons which reflects from the shiny surfaces and makes the spacecraft move away from the sun.

Solar Sails Mech Project Report for Students Conclusion:

The most important advantage of this project “Solar sails” is that it can traverse between planets and stars without fuel. They require only a conventional launch vehicle for the spacecraft to go on its path. In the distant future, solar sails can be used for shuttling between planets and interstellar flights.
