Department of Mechanical Engineering Project Abstract on Demonstration of Cooling Effect Using Sound Waves

The refrigeration system is playing an important role in today’s world in air cooling, food preservation etc and it has become impossible now to imagine life without refrigeration system.

Cooling is obtained primarily by vapor compression system which uses a specific refrigerant in order to maintain the specific temperature level. Although the vapor compression system is used effectively with which engineers are trying constantly to obtain more good alternatives. This project focuses on one possible alternative.

This Department of Mechanical Engineering Project Abstract on Demonstration of Cooling Effect Using Sound Waves described about the principle of conversion of sound energy into thermal energy by using an acoustic driver system and a stack enclosed by a resonator tube and the air cooling effect is demonstrated by this system. It is an eco friendly system because this system operates in an air medium or any noble gas that does not need any refrigerants.

The project is built to demonstrate the cooling effect with the help of sound waves in a small scale. An experimental setup is demonstrated which shows the possibility to achieve a temperature difference of 10 K across the stack.

Conventional refrigerator chills items with the help of compressing and expanding chemicals which is called refrigerants. The heat is transferred from inside to the outside of the fridge for cooling the inside. Sound wave does the same job and very powerful sound wave also conducts heat. The Helium in an acoustic refrigerator is compressed in a small steel cylinder to a pressure 10 times of the Earth’s atmosphere then speaker gets blast a long unchanging note and sends sound waves vibrating by the helium-filled cylinder.

Conclusion:

This project concludes about the process of conversion of sound energy into thermal energy with the help of acoustic driver system and a stack enclosed by a resonator tube. The air cooling effect is demonstrated by this energy system.
